Literacy volunteers help adult learners that have high school diplomas but have been out of school for several years.  Many of these students need to work to boost their math, reading or writing skills to raise their Accuplacer or Compass test scores to take regular classes for college credit. Often we find these students have been displaced from jobs that they may have held for many years and need to go back to school to improve their skills to assume new positions.

Many of our non-citizens are currently here working with a “green card”.  After spending time here, often having children and establishing households, these students wish to become citizens. Our tutors instruct the prospective students on United States History, Government and the interview process to prepare our students for the Citizenship Exam.  One of our most interesting stories is a tutor that originally came from Peru and was working here for a number of years.  She was one of our GED (General Education Development) students who passed with flying colors and became a volunteer. She worked with many Spanish speaking individuals to assist them in becoming citizens, yet she was not yet a citizen. Finally a couple of years ago, she traveled to South Bend for her own “naturalization” ceremony. Now she as well as many of her students have all of the rights and responsibilities that are part of becoming a citizen of the United States.

Tutoring in basic math, reading and writing

Many students come to us seeking help with basic math, reading and writing skills. They may have a high school diploma, but did not learn skills that they need as an adult. This allows the learners to improve their quality of life and at times learn new skills that assist them in getting new jobs.

TASC Examination Preparation

English as a second language

We first provide TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) testing to place students in the appropriate study levels. We also provide all materials and tutors to provide you with the skills to qualify and to take the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) exam. Once the student passes the TASC and gets a high school equivalency diploma doors can open to allow the student the ability to get a better job, move up in their current job or to go on to technical or higher education training.

Several of our volunteers are devoted to working with adult students that have another language as their first language. While the majority of our students are Spanish-speaking, we have also assisted Asian, Middle Eastern and European learners to speak, read and write in English. This allows the student to assimilate into our community provides the ability to communicate with doctors, teachers, supervisors and others. One of our greatest success stories is a man from the Dominican Republic that came to us speaking very little English. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree and is now working on his doctorate at Purdue.

Financial Literacy

Many seniors feel they have been left behind when it comes to tech-nology, and our program is to provide these students with the basic skills and a comfort level using com-puters.  Our oldest com-puter student was a 93-year-old lady. She was fantastic and one of our best students ever be-cause her mind was so open to learning.

Using a program de-veloped by other students that were financially chal-lenged, our students learn how to budget, handle their money and carefully use credit to ensure they can be fiscally secure.
